MILITARIZATION IN CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO/ MILITARIZACIÓN EN CIUDAD JUÁREZ, MÉXICO

On Wednesday April 3rd, elements of the Federal police arrested activist Cipriana Jurado leader of the Non-Governmental Organization, Centro de Investigacion y Solidaridad Obrera and the comrade Carlos Chavez of the organization Agrodinámica Nacional. Agents of the Federal police stopped by force comrade Cipriana and forced her into a car without registration plates, alleging that there was an arrest warrant against her which was never shown during the arrest, nor when she was transferred to the county jail.

At the same time, in the town of Casas Grandes, Carlos Chavez was arrested, he is a co-founder along with Armando Villarreal Martha, the activist who was murdered four weeks ago, of the organization Agrodinámica Nacional. Comrade Cipriana was released on April 4th opening a preliminary inquiry against her for her involvement in a demonstration on October 12, 2005 at the Santa Fe international bridge when she participated in a mobilization in support of rural workers. Carlos Chavez was moved to Ciudad Juarez in the afternoon and handed over to the Attorney General and accused of the same offences. Since the time of arrest numerous organizations have mobilized to demand the release of the comrades and to denounce the intervention and their harassment by the Army and the Federal forces, making the state responsible for the integrity of the detainees and calling for an end to the criminalization of social movements and community activists, as it is rumoured that there is a list of 40 comrades who have an arrest warrant out against them and that the army came to the city with a photographic archive of social activists of the border.

Pedro Paulino Nain, a comrade from the anarchist social center "Kasa de Kultura para Todxs" was arrested in February of this year for his participation in a mobilization in 2003. He has been harassed and scared off attending the social center, and on the same day of the detentions, Sunday, April 3rd, the activists from the social center were informed by an unknown person that the the army had a photographic archive of the members of Kasa de Kultura para Todxs.

Since last April 28 more than 2,000 Mexican Army troops patrol the streets of Ciudad Juarez, they have set up dozens of roadblocks and even helicopters flying over the city as the Federal Government's alleged response to the wave of organized crime-related violence on this border. These actions are part of the so-called “Joint Operation Chihuahua”.
Military elements move through the streets of this city, aiming their long arms at pedestrians, and intimidating the community, besieging the city and violating human rights. Although the army’s advance through the country is justified by the calederonista government as part of the combating of drug trafficking, we know that this argument is only a screen to militarize the country and criminalize social struggles. The patrolling military forces have brought only misery and violence for the Juarenses. For weeks there have been a growing number of complaints against the armed forces, ranging from the torture of members of the municipal police, abuse of power opening fire on a police patrol car, and raping a policewoman of 22, inhuman kidnappings and robberies at the roadblocks, requiring citizens to remain squatted for over half an hour with their hands behind their neck. The state of terror and siege is such that the Municipal police have refused to patrol the city.

Nazis in Chile: A Growing Threat?

Recently Frontline did a slideshow report about Neo-Nazis in Chile. While the report is from a centrist/liberal point of view and seems even mildly sympathetic to nazi youth it is an interesting english language evaluation of what seems to be a growing trend in South America especially in Chile and Ecuador.

April 7th, Oaxaca
Two indigenous women from "the Voice that Breaks the Silence" community radio from Saun Juan Copala in the Mixteca region, were murdered this afternoon, shot during an ambush on a local road while they were on their way to participate in The State Meeting for the Defense of the Rights of the Oaxacan People. The victims were identified as Teresa Bautista Merino and Felicitas Martinez Sanchez aged 24 and 20 years respectively.

-We will hopefully have more info as we translate reports from Oaxaca, These women were involved with a group called CACTUS which works to set up radio throughout the Mixteca region of Oaxaca. The following is from a friend who works with CACTUS:

"Just yesterday I got that word that two young women who were radio
show hosts for the station were assassinated. FELICITAS MARTINEZ
SANCHEZ y TERESA BAUTISTA MERINO were 20 and 22 years old.

My friend has been working with CACTUS to set up stations and he
personally worked with Felicitas and Teresa to train them how to run
the station and how to produce audio pieces.

I'm shocked. I'm outraged and frankly I don't know what to do. I'm
still waiting to hear from CACTUS folks exactly what's going on.

What do we do?"

the Olympics: bloodshed and destruction

Munich

Mexico 1968

Germany 1936

As Olympic time comes around again we wish to remind you that rarely do these games really lead to brotherhood[sic] and international unity. It is often used by authoritarian and repressive governments as an excuse to crack down on dissidents as in Mexico City, as we are seeing in China and Tibet, and as many are expecting in Vancouver 2010 as indigenous lands will be siezed and the games are used as an excuse for 'Development'. We also remind you how Hitler used the 1936 Olympics as propaganda for Naziism as well as the Bloody Black September massacre in Munich.

Chile: Jhonny Presente!

Mapuche Anarchist Jhonny Cariqueo Yañez died March31st, 2008 after suffering a heart attack while being beaten by the Carabineros (chilean police) during protests commemorating the Day of the Youth Combatant, in Pudahuel, Santiago. Jhonny was in the company of two comrades from the collective "Raised Fist" leaving the scene of clashes between police and protesters when a van full of special riot police intercepted them. The police beat and arrested Jhonny and his friends who were brought to the 26th Precinct in Pudahuel where they suffered constant verbal and physical assault...

Jhonny suffered from heart problems and as a consequence of the brutal beating he recieved from the Carabineros he began to have intense chest pains as well as pain in his arm. The police refused his pleas for medical attention claiming (falsely) to not have vehicles available to take him to the hospital. Finally after much insistence by his friends Jhonny was later taken to the emergency room where he was given injections to better him. He was then returned to the jail where he was beaten again, and released the next day. Monday the 31st around 2pm Jhonny laid down in his bed and had a heart attack, minutes later he was dead. The death of our compañero Jhonny Cariqueo Yañez was the consequence of his treatment by the Carabineros, and their subsequent negligence. The death of Jhonny is one more on the long list of radicals who have fallen in their fight against those who profit from our oppression. Are response will be to continue on the path that Jhonny made an effort to construct, the path of revolution, until we achieve our true liberation.

D-Q University Raided in California

On March 31st at 9:45 am, the Yolo County Sheriff's Department raided D-Q University, California's only Tribal college. 18 elders, students and community supporters were arrested after police stormed onto campus with guns drawn. In a similar in0cident on February 20th, Sheriff's deputies came onto the sovereign campus and arrested three Native students. Their court date will be on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7:30 am at the Woodland Courthouse. Supporters are asked to contact the CA Office of the Attorney General Jerry Brown in defense of the students and to denounce the abuse of power by the Board of Trustees and police.

D-Q U was born of struggle in the 70's when people occupied an abandoned Army facility and retained it for the purpose of providing traditional and formal education for Indigenous people. The Board of Trustees who legally preside over D-Q U have become corrupt, betraying the true purpose of the university and abusing their power. In 2005, D-Q U lost its accreditation and the board demanded the school be shut down. Students who condemn the board's negligence have been holding classes themselves and have taken up residence on campus. They are dedicated to protecting D-Q U for the benefit of future generations and the education of all Native people.

Key Police Officer involved in Oaxaca Repression Assassinated in Oaxaca City

This morning Alejandro Barrita Ortiz, director of the Auxiliary, Industrial, Banking and Comercial Police, was assassinated in Oaxaca City at “El Tequio” sports park near the international airport. Two versions of the assassination have surfaced, one which claims the assassins used a 380 and 9mm handguns, and another which claims AK-47s were the weapons of choice. The second version further states that the assassins fled the scene in a red pickup and a black Dodge Stratus. Unofficial reports have surfaced indicating that a phone call was made to the local emergency services hotline by someone claiming to represent the Popular Revolutionary Army (EPR), and that the caller clarified there were “two more left to go”.

Protest the Chilean Consulate!!!
Tues. Jan. 29th, 2008 10am!
For 500 years, The Mapuche have resisted the colonial oppressors. Whether, Spain or Argentina or Chile the history of this proud nation has been one of resistance and struggle. Under Pinochet, the Chilean government enacted terrorism laws against some forms of dissent and protest.

Much like our incarcerated freedom fighters here in the United States,
the Mapuche have fallen victim to these laws, laws similar to the current "Anti -Terror" initiatives being practiced and implemented here. Political Prisoner Patricia Troncoso has been on a hunger strike for 105 days in protest of her incarceration and of these "anti-terror" laws.

Continúamos apoyando a Daniel completamente.

As the world watched in horror, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005. Like many who watched the unfolding drama on television news, director Spike Lee was shocked not only by the scale of the disaster, but by the slow, inept and disorganized response of the emergency and recovery effort. Lee was moved to document this modern American tragedy, a morality play witnessed by people all around the world.

Anti Fascista asesinado por Nazis en Madrid/ Anti Fascist Killed by Nazi in Madrid

Tuesday October 23rd at 7pm
123 Tompkins Ave (off of Myrtle), Brooklyn

Free Movie Night!
Featuring "the Murder Of Fred Hampton" (1971)
This Documentary tells the story of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Black Panther Party in Illinois. Hampton was a fiery orator and though only 21 years old at the time of his death his electrifying words and actions were inspiring young black people to demand respect and to insist that their power and voice be felt.

At the same time the FBI was implementing their notorious COINTELPRO program aimed illegally at suppressing domestic dissent and aimed especially at radical groups like the Black Panthers. Working with local police departments, the government moved against Black Panther chapters and leaders across the country.

On December 4, 196p, in a pre dawn FBI directed police raid, Fred Hampton was murdered. This film shows vividly what the police do to those who dare to openly, aggressively challenge government authority, and the courage of those who dare to fight for a better world.

The Catholic Church and the Military Dictatorship: the Von Wernich case

In Argentina Catholic Priest, Christian Von Wernich, was sentenced to life in prison following his conviction for involvement in the murder of seven people as well as other acts commited in conjuction with the military government.

In 1976 a military coup ushered in the era of the Argentine Military dictatorship which from 1976-1983 waged what has been called the "Dirty War" in which an estimated 30,000 people were "disappeared', tortured and killed. The victims were leftists, students, families of the disappeared and anyone whom the government considered subversive. Recently the perpetratorsof these crimes, the torturers, kidnappers and assasins many military men, many trained by the US government have been arrested and put in jail. Now Roman Catholic Priest Christian Von Wernich has been found guilty of murdering 7 people and in aiding the military junta to disappear individuals. Wernich apparently would pass on information from confessions to military police.

During the trial Argentine Nobel Peace prize laureate, Adolfo Perez Esquivel, himself a prisoner under military rule declared in court that he had told Pope John Paul II personally that the military was kidnapping the babies of women prisoners. "The Pope put down the information I'd given him," he said. "Then he told me: 'You also have to think about the children living in communist countries."

October 2nd is the anniversary of the 1968 student massacre in Mexico City on the eve of the Olympics. Hundreds of students were killed and many more disappeared. The massacre was the governments response to a radical student movement which had been confronting the government. In the days preceding the massacre 15,000 students from various universities marched through the streets of Mexico City, to protest the army's occupation of the university campus. That night 5,000 students and workers, many of them with spouses and children, had congregated outside an apartment complex in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco for what was supposed to be a peaceful rally. Among their chants were ¡No queremos olimpiadas, queremos revolución! ("We don't want Olympic games, we want revolution!").

The massacre began at sunset when police and military forces — equipped with armored cars and tanks — surrounded the square and began firing live rounds into the crowd. Read More.

Every year the massacre is remembered with marches and actions throughout the city often ending with police violence. See video of this years march.

INDIGENOUS ANARCHISM IN BOLIVIA: An Interview with Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui

by Andalusia Knoll, Rustbelt Radio, Pittsburgh
The South American nation of Bolivia has filled the headlines of the global press with its fight against water privatization, struggle for nationalization of gas, non-compliance with free trade policies, and the 2005 election of the continent’s first indigenous president, Evo Morales.

These struggles are rooted in the long history of indigenous resistance to colonialism and imperialism in Bolivia. In an interview conducted during her recent stay in Pittsburgh, subaltern theorist Aymara sociologist and historian Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui discussed Bolivian anarchism, the health benefits of the coca plant and the cocaleros' (coca growers) fight for sovereignty. Free David Venegas Reyes!

Who is DAVID VENEGAS REYES?:
(from anarkismo.net, see prior post for more info on David's case)

"APPO council member: David Venegas Reyes is a young 24-year old Oaxacan student at the University of Chapingo. He is an APPO council member representing some of the largest barricades that carried on the resistance during the long months of the intense struggle of the Oaxacan people.

As a respected representative of the barricades, he was one of the most honest people in the APPO, who never remained silent in the face of attitudes that were contrary to the spirit of the social movement in Oaxaca; instead, he and himself to defend the independence of the APPO from the political parties that tried to lead the APPO into the electoral process.

David Venegas was an obstacle to both the state and federal governments. Dignified people like David will never sell themselves to power by accepting money or a seat in the legislature, or by keeping silent. Even though he’s now being held prisoner, he will not be silenced, nor will thousands of other people who, like David, have dignity."

We call on all people, collectives, and individuals of Oaxaca, Mexico, and the world to refuse to remain silent in the face of heavy repression against the people of Oaxaca and to mobilize in any way possible to demand the freedom of all our comrades who are imprisoned.

We cannot allow people who are prisoners of the struggle to be forgotten. People who defended the barricades are now prisoners.

We propose:

-Demonstrations at Mexican Embassies and Consulates.
-Sending letters of solidarity to David Venegas Reyes and all political prisoners: vocal@riseup.net
-Press conferences and informative talks about the case of David Venegas Reyes and all political prisoners.
-Writing to Mexican authorities to ask for the immediate freedom of David Venegas Reyes and all political prisoners.
-Marches, hunger strikes, cultural events, street theatre, video showings and talks about Oaxaca…

DAVID VENEGAS DENIED FREEDOM AGAIN/NUEVAMENTE NIEGAN LIBERTAD PARA DAVID VENEGAS

(FROM KOLECTIVO TODXS SOMOS PRESXS)

V.O.C.A.L. ACTIVIST DAVID VENEGAS DENIED FREEDOM AGAIN
On September 20, 2007, the Oaxaca state government authorities made yet another dirty move against our compañero David Venegas “El Alebrije”.

Just a few days before, the federal authorities had responded to the petition for a protective writ for David against the pre-trial detention order on charges of SEDITION, CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, and ARSON, granting him a protective writ for the second time. He is due to be released, given that the federal authorities recognized that there was no legal basis for any of the three charges against him.

Yesterday, however, the day he should have been released, the authorities of the Ulises Ruíz government issued a NEW PRE-TRIAL DETENTION ORDER ON RECONFIGURED CHARGES, which are:

ATTACKING A THOROUGHFARE, RESISTING ARREST, REBELLION, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND CRIMES AGAINST PUBLIC OFFICIALS.

As a result, our compañero has not been released and is still unjustly
held prisoner at Oaxaca’s central prison, Santa Marìa Ixcotel, when he should have already been released uncoditionally.

IRON BARS CAN’T SILENCE THE TRUTH!
FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS!
Free David!

Anarchist Book Fair in Monterrey, México
HELP US set a goal of raising US$ 600

The Centro Social Libertario-Biblioteca "Viviendo la Utopía" in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon will be hosting the 2nd Anarchist Book Fair on October 5, 6 and 7th. The Anarchist Social Center-Library "Living Utopia" came into existence as part of a process of reorganization of the anarchist movement in Monterrey and Mexico as a whole.

After the brutal repression that we experienced during protests of the meeting of heads of state of Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union in Guadalajara in 2004, a number of groups around Mexico had to learn to confront the logic of state criminalization unleashed against organized social movements.

The Anarchist Book/Publication Fairs in Mexico have been created as part of this process of reorganization of the Mexican anarchist movement. Read more...

The other 9/11- Never Forget Never Forgive!

In Chile the date of 9/11 brings memories of a traumatic event that does not include images of a 747 crashing into the World Trade Center, the 1973 Coup d' Etat which resulted in the death of Socialist President Salvador Allende and the beginning of the fascist military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet which was responsible for the deaths and disappearance of more than 3,000 chileans with countless imprisoned and viciously tortured.

Pinochet's coup and subsequent dictatorship were supported by the CIA, American Corporations(like ITT), and Secretary of state Henry Kissinger. who was famously quoted as saying:

"I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."

Chilean radicals have been commemorating the 11th of September with militant marches and clashes with the Carabineros (the state police who were responsible for disappearing radicals during Pinochet's regime) proclaiming "ni olvido ni perdon" Never Forget, Never Forgive!

The time is right to FIGHT!

"The Democratic and Republican National Conventions present a tremendous opportunity for anarchists and other opponents of war and oppression. If the increasingly unpopular occupation of Iraq is still in effect by summer of 2008, it will be obvious that neither docile street marches nor electoral campaigns are effective means of opposing it; it will likewise be clear that the Democratic opposition is either not capable of or not interested in following through on their promises of ending the war, let alone solving all the additional problems capitalism poses."

As next years presidential campaign heats up with the usual quasi-fascists and power hungry scum bags vying for the presidency, momentum has also been building amongst anarchists who will likely capitalize on the media spectacle surrounding the presidential campaigns to step up resistance and fight back. A new website called Unconventional Action will no doubt lend a hand to those who wish to confront the Republican Convention in Minneapolis and the Democrats in Denver.

Anarchists in the US getting ready for the Republican Convention.

"A year in advance of the planned Republican dog-and-pony show, the radically minded RNC resistance group is announcing a 2007 Labor Day weekend gathering in the Twin Cities. Wittily dubbed “the pReNC,” the event is to feature educational workshops and a prospective strategizing session.

Contrary to rumors, local anarchists, who do actually exist, are planning the event. Unlike local authorities and law enforcement, Twin Cities anarchists are organizing from the grassroots and will not be relying on national bodies to oversee their plans."

Anarchists in Minneapolis/St. Paul are already planning a radical response to the Republican National Convention, that well be held there a year from now. The "RNC Welcoming Comittee" is holding a Pre-RNC meeting for Radicals across the US to meet and make plans for the convention.

Entrevista con el Colectivo Sacco y Vanzetti de Mexico/Interview with the Sacco and Vanzetti Collective, Mexico

"Mexico is one of the places in the world where our comrades have been repressed in the most brutal manner, from torture to expulsion from the country. This discrimination and aggresion has created an adverse reaction inside of anarchist circles, provoking a growing interest in anti prison struggles. PRI wins in Oaxacan elections 80% abstain from voting

PRI wins in Oaxacan elections as almost 80% abstain from voting, 3 people taken off the streets on election night still not found, among them 2 Catalans and 1 Mexican

Last night, August 5th, as the votes that confirmed the PRI sweep of the state legistlative election were counted

Last night, while the votes were being counted that confirmed a PRI sweep of the state legistlative elections, three people were taken off the streets of the Zocalo in Oaxaca City by police at approximately 10 pm. Among them were two Catalans and one Mexican woman. Their status is still unknown over twelve hours later, and they have not been found in any jail. There is no other confirmed information surrounding their arrests.

The elections, in which almost 80% of the Oaxacan population abstained from voting, came as a dissapointment for the APPO's "punishment vote" campaign against the PRI.

Police presence was extremely heavy in the streets of Oaxaca City last night and today.
By midnight last night one could see over 30 trucks of armed state and judicial police drive through the streets surrounding the Zocalo, and men in plain clothes came through the Zocalo with machetes and cut down the political banners remaining from the section 22 teachers sit-in that ended yesterday. Even later at night state workers came to paint over political graffiti and stencils covering the walls of the buildings in the Zocalo.

With 80% of the state abstaining from voting the legitimacy of the state democracy is questionable, and the low-turn out shows the collective disillution in Oaxaca with the electoral process that has left the heavily contested PRI party, to which Ulises Ruiz belongs, in power for over 70 years.

Oaxaca is not over!

Oaxaca is bracing itself for the upcoming state legislative elections on Sunday August 5, which are surrounded by tension. The recent heavy activity of a questionable guerrilla group has only added to the mood. All the while, the APPO continues to change its profile, and the Oaxaca uprising a year later is continues to development into a political force.
